Main Prooftexts

(A) “The Prophecy” Malachi 4:5-6 (KJV)
5 Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord:
6 And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse.
(B) “Similar Prophecy” Malachi 3:1 (KJV)
3 Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the Lord of hosts.
(C) “Prooftext 1” Matthew 11:13-14 (NET)
13 For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John appeared.
14 And if you are willing to accept it, he is Elijah, who is to come.
(D) “Prooftext 2” Matthew 17:10-13 (KJV)
10 And his disciples asked him, saying, Why then say the scribes that Elias must first come?
11 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Elias truly shall first come, and restore all things.
12 But I say unto you, That Elias is come already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they listed. Likewise shall also the Son of man suffer of them.
13 Then the disciples understood that he spake unto them of John the Baptist.
(E) Luke 1:16-17 (RSV)
16 And he will turn many of the sons of Israel to the Lord their God,
17 and he will go before him in the spirit and power of Eli′jah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready for the Lord a people prepared.”
(F) “Not Elijah” John 1:19-25 (NET)
19 Now this was John’s testimony when the Jewish leaders sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?”
20 He confessed—he did not deny but confessed—“I am not the Christ!”
21 So they asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not!” “Are you the Prophet?” He answered, “No!”
22 Then they said to him, “Who are you? Tell us so that we can give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”
23 John said, “I am the voice of one shouting in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way for the Lord,’ as Isaiah the prophet said.”
24 (Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.)
25 So they asked John, “Why then are you baptizing if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”
